Inspiration:
In teaching various levels of composition and rhetoric, my colleague and I realized that our students didn’t understand how to provide the necessary MLA documentation using the 2016 8th edition updates. We felt a series of short videos would be of great assistance, especially to our online English 105 students. After researching available content online, we envisioned the aesthetic and content we wanted, then we scripted our dialogue, learned how to use Camtasia to record and edit, and filmed over the summer. The videos were then licensed with a Creative Commons license, captioned and posted in our online Canvas shells. After positive feedback from our students, we shared them with the department of English, and many of our colleagues now use them both in class and as an available Canvas resource for their students.
Cost Savings:
The videos replace a $16.00 MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 8th ed. Calculations are based upon an average class size of 28, and 4 sections per full-time faculty.
