    SUBJECT TERMS / STRINGS

Type the subject headings (subject terms or subject strings) exactly as they appear.

Subject headings that appear alone or before dashes (--) are primary subject headings. They can be used alone. Subject terms or subject strings that appear after dashes (--) are secondary. They enable you to narrow down the search. Using the second search term/string is optional.

It takes practice to learn how to use subject headings properly. Here are a few helpful tips:

    >> Cookbooks (term) is used for the genre or form of a work that contains recipes. This heading is added for general works on cooking, cuisine and food preparation where at least a third of the book contains recipes.

    >> Cooking (term) is used as a topical term. The term can be narrowed down by National or ethnic cuisines and specific ingredients of food.

When the focus is on the location, the subject term be narrowed down by geographical location and it will appear with dashes in between Cooking and the location. For example, Cooking -- United States.

When the focus in on the style of cooking or cooking with a specific food, the subject term will be narrowed down by the style or food. For example: Cooking, Jamaican or Cooking (Eggs)

    Cooking

    Cooking, Chilean

    Cooking, Colombian

    Cooking, American

    Cooking -- United States

    Cooking -- Ohio
