Overview of Body Image & Media

Body image is defined by health professional Carla Rice as "an individual's experience of his/her body. It is the mental picture a person has of his/her body as well as the individual's associated thoughts, feelings, judgments, sensations, awareness and behavior." Thus, body image is not just how one looks, but how one feels and acts in response to his or her perceived appearance. Body image changes over time. As Rice states, "Body image is not a static concept. It is developed through interactions with people and the social world, changing across life spans in response to changing feedback from the environment."

The term mass media refers to the entire body of mass communications, including newspapers, magazines, books, television, radio, movies, and the Internet. The media bring news, popular entertainment, and advertising to vast numbers of people, especially in developed nations. By the end of the 2009, the Internet alone was bringing information to more than 1.7 billion users worldwide, up from 360 million in 2000. Many sociologists have examined the relationship between the media and their audiences. Do media actively shape public opinions and values, or are they simply mirrors that reflect the views and values of the society around them? The truth seems to lie somewhere in between. The media both influence public opinion and are influenced by it.
